Because you're not high enough.

You see, the earth is approximately 25,000 miles in circumference and 8000 miles in diameter.  When you look out your window, you see a field only a miniscule portion of the earth which could be flat, or curved, or U shaped if you were standing in a canyon.  If you were standing on a beach and looked out across the ocean, you would only be able to see about 20 miles out into the water until the earth would curve enough for the water to disappear from your visual standpoint.  This is exactly why folks thought the earth was flat several hundred years ago.  An outbound boat would disappear under the visual standpoint of the observer, therefore it was thought the boat would fall of the edge.  It was only when the boat returned did they find out from the captain that they were nowhere near the edge and a few brave souls trevelled further until one day Earnest Balboa (not Christopher Columbus) discovered America.

The most conclusive proof the earth is round comes from the fact that we have countless photographs of a round earth, and so far nobody has ever located the "edge".  Steve Fausett departed Salina Municipal Airport (SLN) travelling Eastbound and remained on an Eastbound course until he eventually ended up back at SLN.

For someone to totally ignore the undisputable evidence we have of a round earth in favor of a theory that has a total lack of evidence is beyond me.  I have never gotten an anser from any FE'er that gives an opinion of why they believe the earth is flat.  Not one.  However, I believe the main reason folks thought the earth was flat originated from a gross misinterpretation from a single Bible scripture that spoke of four angels standing at the four corners of the earth.


Rev 7:1  And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

Strong's Greek and Hebrew dictionaries define a corner as a quarter.  The four quarters of the earth, and not corner as used in today's language.

This is the most elementary factor of rational thought. If you can not grasp this basic concept, then you really need to go back to grade school (10 year-olds know this stuff - I even know 3 year-olds that get this).

All you are doing now is trolling because unless you have something seriously wrong with your brain, you understand rational thought. If you understand rational thought, then you should also understand that if something does not discriminate between two choices, then it is not useful.

Think about when you are buying something like Cars. If there is nothing that can differentiate between them, then the choice between two cars is not rational. But if there is something that differentiates them, then you can make a decision based on that difference.

If you really do not grasp this concept, then there is nothing more that you can contribute as the purpose of this site is to have a rational debate about the shape of the Earth. Thus we must use rational though, which requires us to use evidence that differentiates between the different theories.

Looking out your window does not do this. The mathematics of geometry does. The mathematics of geometry when applied to the problem of the shape of the Earth states that the Earth really is round. If you want to debate this, prove to me that 1 + 1 does not = 2.

The Shape of the Earth has been mathematically proven beyond any doubt. The only way you can actually prove that the Earth is not Round is to prove that maths does not work. That is 1 + 1 does not = 2."

If you can prove the shape of the earth so easily, show us the math.

First, I would point out that a non-round earth would not be in hydrostatic equilibrium and gravity would promptly reshape it to make it round. Even if the ground that makes the earth was rigid enough to avoid being deformed (it isn't), the fluids in the earth (air and water) would quickly move to the centre of gravity of the planet.

That said, you asked for math, so I'll show you some math: Take any two points that are 5000 km apart and measure the angle to the sun. The two measurements will differ by 45 degrees. There are two "main" explanations for this:

A) The earth is round, and 5000 km is 1/8th of the circumference and the sun is far enough away that the light beams all arrive essentially parallel.
B) The earth is flat, and the sun is about 5000 km up.

I said that these are the "main" explanations because technically there is an infinite number of models, for various curvatures of the earth and various distances of the sun, and models A and B are just the two end points.

Anyways, to distinguish the correct model, we repeat the experiment using a different distance. The point is that as the two points move closer, the angles change a different rates depending on whether the earth is round (with the sun far away) or flat (with the sun nearby). Bring the two points so they are 5km apart, model A predicts an angular difference of 0.045 degrees whereas model B predicts an angular difference of 0.06 degrees. Thus, we can distinguish between the two models.

You can repeat this experiment with various distances. In general, the more accurately you can measure the angle to the sun, the more accurately you can compute the distance to the sun and the circumference of the earth.
